OPAA JUVENILE PROSECUTOR TRAINING - 2017
Sheraton Columbus at Capitol Square, Columbus, Ohio October 12, 2017


This one day training will be geared toward the juvenile prosecutor, but all are welcome to attend. We are pleased to have Judge Hejmanowski back to give us an update on juvenile laws enacted as well as those working their way through the legislature, and we welcome Mary Sawicki from the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys in to talk about using experts in, and dealing with recanting victims during, child victim cases.

10:00 - 11:30 What To Do When Your Child Victim Recants - Ways To Save the Case!
This workshop will highlight the dynamics and risk factors of recantation in child abuse cases. In addition, this workshop will focus on effective and thorough investigation of recantation techniques as well as strategies for presenting a recantation to the jury at trial.

12:30 - 2:00 Use of Expert Witnesses in Child Abuse/Sexual Abuse Cases
This workshop will highlight the importance of utilizing an expert in a child abuse/sexual assault prosecution. In addition, this workshop will discuss factors to consider before retaining an expert for the prosecution as well as strategies for an effective direct examination of the prosecution expert and a vigorous cross-examination of the defense expert.

2:15 - 3:15 Juvenile Case Law and Legislative Update
An overview of recent case law affecting the prosecution of juveniles including all relevant Ohio appellate, Ohio Supreme Court and applicable federal decisions in the areas of juvenile delinquency, juvenile traffic, abuse/neglect/dependency and unruly cases. Also included will be a legislative update that will cover all state law changes in those areas as well as pending legislation and Ohio rule changes.
